PUTTING TOGETHER A MAGAZINE can literally be like summiting your favorite mountain. Consider this issue of Aspen Peak: This winter we all congregated in our favorite place—the lift line, of course—eagerly awaiting the thrill of one of the best ski seasons in Aspen history. Conversation was spontaneous and new relationships were forged. As an editor I’m always on the lookout for stories, and the idea for this issue’s “Mountains That Rock” feature, which previews iconic images from photographer Lynn Goldsmith’s new book Rock and Roll, evolved on the Ajax gondola (I hope you’ll find inspiration in the images of legendary musicians like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Joe Cocker).

We also have a candid conversation with artist Grace Slick and exciting interchanges with other passionate, driven people. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper gives his vision for the Democratic National Convention (“Conventional Wisdom”), art connoisseur Nancy Magoon reflects on today’s contemporary art scene (“In the Frame”), and chef Masaharu Morimoto takes us behind the tents of the Food & Wine Classic (“My Classic”). And a visit to the studio with John Oates (“Mix Master”) gives us a taste of a new solo album that’s truly from the heart.

We take full advantage of stunning scenery in our fashion story set in Moab (“Desert Rose”), a favorite Aspen getaway. On the home and design front, celeb designer Kelly Wearstler sheds light on the new Viceroy Resort & Residences Snowmass (“Viceroy (re)Vamp”), and we take stock in the state of our valley’s green architecture (“From the Bottom Up”).

Just when I thought the proverbial pinnacle had been reached, along came cover star Dakota Johnson. As the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, both part of our local community, she represents a new generation of homegrown talent. Discover her youthful, savvy, and refreshing take on our sophisticated valley in “Model Citizen.”

As for me, I’m elated to bring you the results of this invigorating climb and am glad you’ve joined us. Enjoy the inspiring views!
